Merchandise Design

For my partner, I created a custom piece of Bloodborne-themed merchandise titled Love Beyond Nightmare. This design delves into one of the most poignant and mysterious aspects of the game's lore: the speculated connection between Lady Maria and Gehrman.

Fans of Bloodborne often interpret their story as a tragic love interest. Gehrman, isolated and eternally trapped in the Hunter’s Dream, is believed to have crafted the Doll in the image of Lady Maria—a hunter he deeply admired, if not loved. However, the Doll, while bearing Maria’s likeness, is nothing like the strong-willed, passionate woman she was in life. Despite this, Gehrman shows tender care for the Doll, perhaps out of a longing for the connection he lost.

The lore hints at Maria’s presence lingering in some form, particularly through the Doll’s dialogue in the Old Hunters DLC. When the ornament believed to be Maria's is brought to the Doll, she expresses a subtle, almost spiritual connection to Maria’s spirit. The nature of this bond remains ambiguous, as does the magic that animates the Doll. This interplay of love, loss, and mystery forms the emotional core of Love Beyond Nightmare.

The merchandise design reflects these themes, blending haunting beauty with melancholy. It features symbolic elements like the Doll and Maria’s ornament, with dark, dreamlike motifs to evoke the eerie yet captivating atmosphere of Bloodborne. For my partner, a fan of both the game and its intricate lore, this piece celebrates the depth of its storytelling and the enduring appeal of its tragic characters.

The design draws from the melancholic themes of Bloodborne’s lore, particularly the idea that Gehrman, trapped in the Dream, created the Doll in the likeness of Lady Maria. Nods to Maria’s ornament and the Doll’s subtle connection to her spirit in the Old Hunters DLC served as key creative influences.

Love Beyond Nightmare embodies the duality of love and loss. The design features ethereal, dreamlike motifs, blending Maria’s strong presence with the Doll’s haunting gentleness. Dark, muted tones and intricate details reflect the somber, gothic aesthetic of Bloodborne.
